In an interview with Agricultural Insights Africa, the CEO of Ekar Agroscience shares how the company has grown into a trusted partner for farmers across Africa, emphasizing sustainability, innovation, and community well-being.

AIA: Ekar Agroscience is headquartered in Africa with a strong focus on the continent’s agricultural needs. How has this regional focus shaped your business strategy?
Being rooted in Africa allows us to deeply understand the unique challenges and opportunities faced by farmers here. Our customers are increasingly prioritizing sustainable, cost-effective solutions that deliver value. This aligns with our mission to provide cutting-edge products and services that ensure profitability, even for small-scale farmers, while maintaining environmental integrity.

Which African markets are key to Ekar Agroscience, and where are you expanding?
Our primary markets include Uganda, Kenya, and other East African countries, with growing operations in West and Southern Africa. We’ve established strong partnerships with companies like Kuku Chic Ltd (Uganda and Kenya), PITCO (Belgium), Metrovet Kenya Ltd, Solinkon (Turkey), Ecolyfe (Turkey), Stedet Uganda Ltd, and Ms Shippers (Netherlands). These collaborations enable us to expand our reach and deliver high-quality products across the continent.

Ekar Agroscience focuses on veterinary and public health solutions. How do you balance these two core areas, and what growth do you anticipate in the coming years?
Both veterinary and public health divisions are equally critical to our mission. Our veterinary products, such as antibiotics, antihelminthics, vaccines, and nutritional supplements, support healthy livestock and poultry, while our public health solutions promote safe and sustainable farming practices. We expect steady growth in both areas as demand for sustainable agriculture rises across Africa.

How does Ekar Agroscience differentiate itself from competitors in the African market?
We prioritize strong relationships with our customers by offering tailored solutions, exceptional customer care, and innovative products. Our focus on sustainability and environmental synergy sets us apart, ensuring that our solutions not only benefit farmers but also contribute to healthier communities and ecosystems.

What are the biggest concerns your customers have regarding animal nutrition and public health, and how do you address them?
Farmers are concerned about reliability, traceability, and sustainability of their inputs. Our products, including premixes, vaccines, and hygiene solutions, are manufactured under strict quality controls to ensure consistency and safety. We also provide training and research to empower farmers with knowledge, ensuring they can achieve optimal results while adhering to public health standards.

Sustainability and animal welfare are increasingly important. How does Ekar Agroscience address these priorities?
Sustainability is at the core of our operations. We develop products like antistress solutions and probiotics that enhance animal welfare and productivity while reducing environmental impact. Our commitment to sustainable environmental synergies ensures that our solutions support both farm profitability and community well-being.

Ekar Agroscience aims to be a one-stop shop for farmers in Africa. How are you working toward this goal?
We offer a comprehensive range of products, from antibiotics and vaccines to equipment and housing solutions, tailored to the needs of African farmers. Our research and development team continuously innovates to meet emerging demands, and our partnerships with global and local companies ensure a diverse and reliable product portfolio.

The global trend is moving toward antibiotic-free animal production. How is Ekar Agroscience addressing this in Africa?
Antibiotic-free production is challenging in Africa due to disease prevalence and management practices. However, we promote responsible antibiotic use, focusing on specific treatments rather than growth promoters. Our pre- and probiotics and nutritional products help reduce reliance on antibiotics while maintaining animal health and productivity.

How does Ekar Agroscience adapt to the diverse needs of farmers across different African countries?
We recognize that each market has unique cultural and agricultural needs. We employ local staff, train them to understand our portfolio, and empower them to deliver customized solutions. This "act local, think global" approach ensures that we meet the specific demands of each region while maintaining high standards.
